Ye-Jin Kim, who completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Chemistry at UNIST, has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Seoul National University.

Dr. Kim served as a postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) after obtaining his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from UNIST.

Born in Ulsan, Dr. Kim has garnered attention for his exceptional achievements since his undergraduate studies in chemistry. He has received the Samsung Humantech Paper Award on three occasions, demonstrating outstanding research results during her master’s and doctoral programs under the mentorship of Professor Oh Hoon Kwon. Notably, he attracted the interest of the academic community by winning the Korean Chemical Society’s Best Doctoral Paper Award for her thesis on “Multidimensional Ultra-High-Speed Electron Microscopy.”

Her research interests encompass cutting-edge fields that are rarely encountered in Korea, including 4D electron microscopy, ultrafast ultraviolet spectroscopy, and nonlinear attosecond optical pulse generation.

At Caltech, she conducted research on “Examination of Non-Equilibrium Electrons and Structural Dynamics.” Her work is anticipated to contribute significantly to the advancement of future technologies, ranging from fundamental studies exploring the motion of electrons that determine the structure of matter to practical applications in clean energy.

Professor Kwon remarked, “I have imparted the educational and research philosophies learned from the late Professor Ahmed Hassan Zewail, a laureate of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, to Dr. Kim following his appointment at UNIST.” He further added, “She exemplifies the spirit of ‘Cheongchul Eoram (靑出於藍): The Pupil Has Become the Master’ and is expected to have a bright future as a young chemist who will represent Korea.”
